Jesus' Mission on Earth

Acts 8:32-35  32   Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this: "Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth.   In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth."   The eunuch asked Philip, "About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?"   Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus.

Predictions of Jesus' suffering and resurrection

Mark 8:31  Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

Mark 9:30-32  30   They went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again."  But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him.

Mark 10.33-34  33   saying, "See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles; they will mock him, and spit upon him, and flog him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise again."

Discipleship:

Mark 8:34-9:1   He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.  For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.  For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life?  Indeed, what can they give in return for their life?   Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."  And he said to them, "Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the kingdom of God has come with power."

Although originally meaning Israel, the early church used the aforegoing indicate that the servant mentioned in Isaiah was prophetic of Jesus' mission and Jesus may have been shaped by it.

Jesus' Mission on Earth 2

The early church used the aforegoing indicate that the servant mentioned in Isaiah was prophetic of Jesus' mission and Jesus may have been shaped by it.

The Prophet Isaiah 53:3-8   He was despised and rejected by others; a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces he was despised, and we held him of no account.    Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.   But he was wounded for our for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed.   All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.   He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.   By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people.

Luke 4:15-19 [after his encouunter with the devil] He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.   When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:   "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
